The fragility of the air left Rose, and her face holding her head high she felt for the first time in a long while at peace, no longer haunted and living within the shell of her former self she saw the beauty of Ginaz around her and in the gesture of Niobe Atreides. She would not live her life anymore for someone who was already dead. Tucking her brothers arm firmly in her own she studied his strong jaw, already he was beginning to lose the baby fat of his face and starting to develop the features that would follow him into adulthood. Time was very precious she thought as they passed the other Noble Houses and she caught idle chatter of servants, jewels and clothes as if that was all there was to life, she would be happy to leave here and return once again to her forests of Giedi Prime the raw abandoned area of the Ravens Cliff with the sea crashing below was the most peaceful of sounds. Finally she was there and in front of the Royal Person himself, the last time they had met he was yet to ascend the throne and his father just passed on himself. Now he was married and Emperor of the Known Universe, greeting her cordially she did the same in return, It is with great tidings that House Harkonnen bids you my lord., yes, I have come to give my condolences and thanks to the Duchesses. she said bowing her head lightly in his royal presence. She wondered where his wife the Empress was she had heard the usual gossip of trouble in their marriage but what arranged marriage was there not trouble but it was neither her concern nor interest at this moment. Nodding humbly once again at the Emperor she turned her attention to Niobe, with emotional candor as much as was permitted one of her station she looked into the womans eyes and held out her hand to her as she spoke. Thank you for your kind gesture Duchess Atreides, it was a noble one for one so fitting for it as my own Swordmaster as well as your own, House Harkonnen is in your debt. Sworn enemies for millennia now she did not even know the reasons behind it anymore. Holding her brother close to her she whispered to him
this does not change the past Sebastian, but perhaps just perhaps we can move forward into the future with this gesture. Smiling once again at the Duchess for there was no need for thanks she bid her farewell and a safe journey to her home planet of Caladan.

"It is good that you draw some comfort from our presence anyway. Our schedule could not possibly permit us to attend the rites of every nobleman to pass away during our reign, and that the Empress and I are here is a sign of how well the Marquis was liked in the Imperium at large".Niobe inclined her head and lowered her eyelids for an instant in silent gratitude; although of doubtful sincerity, reassuring words such as the Emperors held the tiny hope that Jacobs life had not been forgotten along with his death, that he was not simply another name in the pages of history. But arent we all that, ultimately?
But Niobe had plans of her own; she would do everything in her power to shed some light into the mystery, no matter the expense. And when she discovered the coward who had stabbed Jacob in the back, they will learn the extent of her vengeance.Dismissing such emotion-charged thoughts from her mind, the Duchess braced herself for a short exchange of words with Baroness Rose Harkonnen and her brother she could expect either reaction from them: good or bad, and each would be handled tactfully as protocol demanded. Thank you for your kind gesture Duchess Atreides, it was a noble one for one so fitting for it as my own Swordmaster as well as your own, House Harkonnen is in your debt.Niobes pale lips shifted into a smile and held Roses gaze valiantly, surprised to discover
candor in the eyes of her enemy by default: she could remember still one stormy Caladanian night when her father had swept her and her mother, Aleera Atreides, and taken them to the citadel safety ward, alarms blaring all around them. Morning light uncovered the remains of the fight between house guards and three agents of believed Giedi Prime provenance, infiltrated earlier that week for uncertain purposes, but assasination was the unspoken word on everyones lips. That had been many years before, when she and Rose were but children; with both fathers dead, was the kanly, the Vendetta, their inheritance?
Niobe judged people and situations based upon her experiences with them and not ancient history. The feud had been held in a precarious balance for nearly two full decades despite the efforts of many who wished to see them enemies once more, only to pick up the spoils of a war which wasnt theirs. Well, Niobe and Rose might surprise them still! Please, Baroness, there is no debt between us. Niobe replied softly. I only did what any human being would have done, under the circumstances. I thank you for attending
I believe they would have liked to know we were both
present tonight.Of course, Jacob and Kaneda had been comrades and friends; strangely even in death they enforced their opinion that the present, with its enmities and friendships, were their own to create it.Farewells exchanged, the event appeared to move towards its ending. Calling for silence, Niobe spoke for all to hear:In the name of Houses Ginaz and Atreides, I thank you all for your attendance tonight she said, her voice amplified by a hidden microphone activated on cue, giving the Emperor and his wife an extra nod of courtesy. We are all very grateful for this homage to the souls of the fallen; please continue at your leisure and when you wish it, ground cars have been dispatched to bring you to the hotels. With that, Niobe exited the room and immediately was immediately seated in her own car which sped off into the musky, Ginazi night.

"How lovely! Well, do enjoy yourselves won't you? I'm sure you'll find plenty to see. Anyway, I'd best get back to... uhh... mingling. That's what ambassadors do after all, right?!"Lucy gulped quietly, her first and foremost thought being: has she been drinking?! She knew that look, having seen it enough times when Elisha stumbled back into the apartment they shared, somewhere between stupor and toxic shock; that being an usual sign of either a spectacular night or a horrid one. Given the frozen smile and irritated tone, however, Lucy strongly suspected the latter, and was suddenly touched by a pang of guilt:Maybe I shouldnt have left so quickly, the girl thought and was about to follow Elisha, but she had already vanished into the crowd beyond the alcove. She looked angry; best leave her to cool off, she decided at last, not really enthusiastic about missing the opportunity to get to know a Swordmaster of Ginaz. Attributing Elishas irritation to that embarrassing marriage proposal and nothing more, Lucy Montague assured herself that she would no doubt find enjoyable company for the evening to distract her from it after all, when had Elisha failed to do so?Please tell me that was not
your mother, Derek said suddenly and drew back a step, sizing Lucy up suspiciously. Of course not! the girl snapped, equally appalled at being considered young enough to have Elisha for a mother. She is my aunt! My mothers youngest sister.Satisfied with the explanation, the Swordmaster eased up and repositioned himself at Lucys side, one arm coiled strategically around her waist.Well then, times wasting by sitting here, and I promised this lovely lady a tour of Ginaz. That being said, Derek tugged Lucy away down the dimly lit corridor, preceeded by his companions knowledgeable smirks and sniggers.
Four hours later, a ground car halted to an abrupt stop in front of the Ginaz Sanctuary hotel complex. A petite figure emerged from inside, slamming the door angrily: a desheveled Lucy Montague, her hair hanging saggily around her face, her ceremonial robe creased, and a look that could have curdled milk frozen on her features. Striding inside with wide, poignant steps she completely ignored the ushers greeting and blinked away one bitter wave of rage-fueled tears:That
filthy slig! The dream tour of Ginaz in the company of Swordmaster Derek Ashton had turned sour when his advances, more or less dismissed by Lucy, were becoming increasingly aggressive. The girl didnt appreciate his overbearing attitude and impatience regarding the outcome of their encounter, and a swift rebuke consisting of a knee flung in a certain sensitive place had made that quite clear. Fortunately for her, a night patrol thopter happened to fly by, stilling Dereks urges to claim what she had refused him by force, and allowing her to return - piqued but otherwise unhurt - to the main island.Visibly shaken and angry with herself for playing right into Dereks hands like a witless floozy, the girl unlocked the door to hers and Elishas hotel chambers impatiently, diving straight into her room and curling up underneath the bed sheets, in a foul mood.

"Come on, sleepy head. Rise and shine! We need to be packed and ready to leave at noon!"A few seconds later, Lucy flung the door open, meeting her aunt with a cold glance and tightly pursed lips. She had shed her ceremonial robe which lay into a crumpled heap on the floor, replacing it with a loose nightdress hanging lopsidedly off one shoulder. Seized by the desire to block away her bubbling rage, Lucy trotted across the room stiffly, combing her wet hair with one hand and packing her suitcase with the other, naturally failing to complete either task. When the suitcase, loaded with randomly tossed items refused to close, Lucy cursed through her teeth and kicked it off the bed in a fit of pique. She averted Elishas gaze, unable to contain her revulsion: for minutes on end she had been forced to listen to masculine grunts and suggestive moaning from her aunts room, which combined with her recent experiences had made for the drop which filled the proverbial glass.I see youre in a much better mood now , she commented and began re-arranging the contents of her luggage until able to finally seal it for the journey ahead. Uncaringly she dropped her night dress and pulled on the last remaining shirt and pair of trousers. Smeared makeup encircled her eyes where the water from the shower had not reached, and ashen streaks running down her pale cheeks stood testimony of bitter tears. Lucy looked away and wiped them off with the back of her hand, striding into the kitchen where she poured a large cup of strong coffee. She wished the ground would open up and swallow her whole, if only to spare her Elishas gloating smile.

The chances she was taking in her conversation with this man were ones that could be the deaths of them both, and for once she did not care. Her husband nowhere to be seen and no where to care for that matter was elsewhere, probably ogling the other Royalty or someone else. He would come for her when it was necessary or presentation purposes whichever one came first. He was Sardukar after all, fanatical loyalty was within their blood, she however studied the minute changes of expression in his face and his mannerisms with her, and she sensed the same yearning that she herself was feeling. Given the distance as the Imperial Wife they had some sort of privacy, as close as they would get to one here of all places. Looking at him all she could think of was returning to her home planet and seeing her mother once again. "I assure you once again we will be quite safe there, no harm will come to either of us
"With that she smiled thinking of seeing Alpha once again she had not been there since before her wedding, Kaliea would love it as well as well as herself for that matter, before an answer could be reached another came to them
"Madam, are you still chewing poor Garnder's ear off? came her husband from out of nowhere but then he was the Emperor now, almost as slimy as his Chamberlain back home on Kaitain. For once however she was glad of not only her Bene Gesserit Training but also the lessons learned from her teachers in the show of emotion. Her face betraying none of the surprise that she felt, took her husbands arm and left with him and the retinue of guards. Somewhere within them she knew that he was there and watching her she only hoped he did not betray the both of them. She did not know if there would be time for them to exchange words aboard the heighliner, and made the decision then that there would not be
tucking her husbands arm under her own and pulling herself closer to him. She whispered to him squeezing his arm
"My lord, would it be possible for a visit to Alpha for me and Kaliea to be arranged? " With that they had come to their own craft to take them aboard the heighliner that waited in space for them. She would make the journey home to Kaitain in her husbands chambers

As much as Lucy would have liked, there was no avoiding Elisha and her withering glance, no matter how low she sunk into her chair, burying her gaze into the steam wafting from her coffee cup. "What's the matter? Sword Boy decided not to stay the night? Well come on, what did you expect? Surely you didn't really think you'd found a keeper there. Just cherish the memory I say..."The mocking statement, however in character for her aunt stung Lucy deeply and only her sense of personal pride prevented an angry sob that moment; how dare she! Always the pragmatist, that was Elisha now, wasnt it, the girl thought poisonously and took a hearty gulp of the revigorating hot liquid, which coursed down her throat as venom coursed through her veins. "Lucy... what's wrong? Come on, you can tell me. Really it can't be that bad can it?"The girls hopes to be left alone to lick her wounds shattered, she discarded the coffee cup and stood up, stony faced and rigid. The build-up of shame, disgust and anger were reaching a boiling point, when she no longer cared whether Elisha would laugh at her and call her a naïve little girl no, now all she wished with every fiber of her being is to shout the truth in her face, to shock her!You wanna know what happened?! she spat. Oh I will tell you what happened! That slig tried to rape me! Yes, Elisha, rape! In one brusque movement, Lucy uncovered her upper arms and shoulder, sporting several deep bruises and scratches.Because I wouldnt give him
what he wanted willingly, he decided to force me! It was through sheer dumb luck that a night patrol happened to wonder by and stopped him at the very last moment, otherwise who knows, Id be lying in some gutter right now! But maybe you would have liked that, oh yes, no longer having to play the baby sitter to your niece, I am sure my dear grandfather would be thrilled, to finally be rid of the smudge on his familys reputation! The torrent of anger washing over her, Lucy felt strangely calm
hollow and numb. With memorys hazy eye she replayed the events of that night: flying with Derek into the clear night sky of Ginaz, exchanging some words, lips crushed together in a long and overpowering kiss
he was trying to slip his hands underneath her clothes but she kept stopping him. Then at the barracks, where his quarters were. There had been something there he didnt want her to see. What was it..?
Drugs! Lucy remembered walking into the Swordmasters bathroom because she was becoming weary of waiting and saw the empty capsules on the sink just as he was dumping them swiftly in a bag. She recalled the angry sparkle in his eyes and his hands clenching her tightly, painfully tight. Shouting profane curses, the enraged, intoxicated man had then flung her upon the floor, throwing his burly figure over her dainty form, his hands exploring her body with lustful urgency
and then only desperation, the shouts, her fighting to free herself from his grip
Tears welling in her eyes, Lucy threw herself into her aunts arms and sobbed quietly. Some few minutes later they sat calmly at the table, and she retold the events of that night, each word dropping like a stone off her tightly pursed lips.

As she finished her story, Lucy anticipated her aunts reaction not without a certain amount of discomfort; she felt abashed, yes, for her inability to forsee what Derek was likely to do, and the last thing she needed was Elisha to twist the knife in. She was also beginning to calm down, and reason slowly tempered anger, leaving way for more practical thinking. Her arm and shoulder ached and throbbed, but the damage could have been worse..much worse. And then, the thought struck her: the Duke! All colour drained from her cheeks as Lucy envisioned Duke Roberts rebuke at hearing her story, and his retribution which Elisha was likely to share, since she was, technically, her guardian even though Lucy herself was no longer underage. Until she graduated and found her own means of survival however, in the eyes of the family she remained Elishas charge. Whatever happened, the Duke could never find out!"Well he's not getting away with this" Elisha declared angrily, causing Lucy to gaze at her with brief gratitude. Shunned by a family who would have preferred for the most part that she had never been born at all, it was reassuring to realize somebody actually cared. In a strange way, she and Elisha were very much alike."Now we could go to the authorities, but really it would be your word against his and I highly doubt that they'll choose to believe a nigh on unknown guest over one of their own. No, we need to teach this fellow a lesson ourselves. It'll mean you have to see him again, but you won't have to be alone with him and I'm sure you'd like to know he's getting his just deserts wouldn't you?"It was only after a long while that Lucy tilted her head in agreement; there was nothing that she wanted more than revenge on that slig of a Swordmaster, yet at the same time the idea of seeing him again filled her with revulsion. She also knew if she turned away in fear then, she would regret it for the rest of her life."Lucy, I shouldn't have left you alone with him. I really am sorry."No, it was my decision to go, entirely, she retorted in a burst of self awareness; bad as it was, the decision had been hers. Im just sorry Ive been so incredibly naïve about it, thats all, I couldve gotten us both into a lot of trouble
now, about this plan of yours
what do you have in mind?Decisiveness sparkled in her eyes; it would have been so rewarding to see Derek pay for this deed, even if it meant facing him again.
